The joy of spring

I finally got to try out the new power edger today, and it was a lot easier to use than I’d expected – though, to be honest, I think the ground was still a bit too damp, because I had to stop quite regularly to free the blade by removing claggy lumps of soil and grass from inside the safety housing. Still, in the space of about forty minutes I edged four flower beds, a task that would have taken me several days with a half-moon edger. When R saw what I’d achieved he could hardly believe his eyes – and when I went back to admire the long front border, which I’d done first, and saw how wavy the edge was, I could hardly believe mine either. It currently looks as if it was done in the dark, by someone who’d just rolled out of the pub after a long session – but the next time I cut the grass I’ll tidy it up a bit, and I’m sure I’ll get better with practice.

After cleaning my new toy and putting the battery on charge I walked round the garden with the camera, and found several male Plumpies patrolling the flower beds. I know perfectly well that their drivers for this behaviour are:

1. sex; and

2. food;

but I still find it hard not to imagine that they enjoy zooming around in the sunshine like this. Anyway, whether or not they experience the pleasure of movement, they certainly fill me with the joy of spring.
