“You’re gorgeous, you are. Mwah….

The cold, clear weather of the last few days disappeared overnight, and we were left with drab dankness. Or dank drabness. Either way, it was horrible to be out in. But I really hate being stuck in the house in the middle of winter, and so does R, so we went out for coffee, and the vague justification of a walk along the bank of the Avon.

By the time I got to the Bancroft Basin the surface ice was melting fast, and some of the gulls towards the edges of the pool were already standing ankle-deep in water. (Do gulls have ankles? They have some kind of tibiotarsal joint, anyway, or their legs would have to end in spikes like the one at the bottom of a shooting stick, to prevent them falling over.) Anyway, this individual was closer to the centre, and was still mincing around on wet ice, treading carefully and digging in its claws for purchase at each step. Here it was probably taking a little drink – as in my second photo from a couple of days ago – but it amused me to fantasise that it was admiring its own reflection.
