Freesia

When I spotted these freesias at the supermarket today I couldn’t resist them, because I’d never seen this combination of colours in this flower before. They weren’t in the best condition, so I doubt they’ll survive very long, but at the moment they’re filling the kitchen with their scent, and I’m happy to enjoy them while they last.

I thought of taking multiple images of this and creating a focus stack, but complex shapes like this can be tricky to stack, so I decided to go for the single shot, playing around with angles and apertures until I got to something I quite like. I also tried shooting it against a black background, which brought out the richness of the colours, but I decided in the end that this had a slight edge. If you have the time, it would repay being viewed full-screen.
