It was another of those days when it felt as if it would rain for ever, but it wasn’t as heavy as the forecast had suggested it might be, and R and I had some errands to run, so we went out anyway. While he was collecting a weighted heat pad from the Maybird Centre in Stratford (recommended for a photographer who’s sustained severe bruising by tripping in a bird hide and bouncing a couple of floating ribs off a protruding wooden bracket), I scuttled down to the river to see what wildlife might be out and about.
Not much, was the answer – unsurprisingly, given that the rain was coming on again after a brief lull – but I do like this almost-mono gull on almost-mono water. In fact, I went the whole hog and processed the image in mono, before deciding that the pop of red actually adds something, and reverting to colour. The fact that the choppy reflections of bare tree branches make the water look like marbled book endpapers is a welcome bonus.
