A chaos of gulls

A dreary, damp Monday morning in Stratford was enlivened by quarter of an hour at the river, watching a succession of people arriving and throwing bird food, and the absolute scenes that immediately followed. ‘Feeding frenzy’ barely covers it.

As you may have spotted by now, I generally like to photograph Black-headed Gulls singly, preferably looking calm and elegant on interesting water. But I was amused and intrigued by the shots I took of this scramble, because however closely I looked at the sequence, I still couldn’t quite decide which wings belonged to whom. If I’m honest, it’s far more typical of their behaviour.
