I’m nearly as tired of talking about the horrible weather now as I am of enduring it, but we are where we are: today was another cold and rainy day. But it was Friday, and R and I decided that we’d behave as though weekends are still significant, even though we’re now retired and every day is effectively a holiday, and cheer ourselves up by going out for lunch. I won’t describe the enormous breakfast bap I demolished in Hillers cafĂ©, because it was outrageous – or confess to having shared a chocolate tiffin with R afterwards, because that was simply egregious – but I will say that it was a Very Good Lunch, and made me feel almost perky.
After coffee (and tiffin) I went to the bird hide for a damp and chilly half hour, during which most of the activity centred around two plastic feeders full of sunflower hearts, which were being loudly squabbled over by several Goldfinches and Greenfinches, and a few especially assertive Tits. Meanwhile I enjoyed the company of this little Nuthatch, which suddenly appeared right in front of the hide and quietly helped itself to a meal of peanuts, while all the fuss and palaver was going on at the other side of the clearing.
