It was much too hot today for me to want to do anything other than lie down in a darkened room, but after the garden failed to provide me with any subjects I didn’t have much choice other than to wander round to the old village pond. When I was at Lower Moor last week I noticed that there had been a second emergence of Four-spotted Chasers, and I’d say that this one is relatively fresh as well, though he does have a couple of nicks out of his left hand wings. He certainly displayed all the energy of a creature in his prime, whizzing around the pond like a thing demented until I felt quite exhausted just watching him. Because of the time of day the sun was a little behind him from where I was standing, which explains the sparkly bokeh.
The only other dragon at the pond was an ovipositing female Emperor, which reminded me that it’s at least ten days since I last saw the male who ruled this little roost for much of last month. While it’s sad to think that he may have fallen victim to a faster predator, the fact that the female had eggs to lay shows that there’s at least one male Emperor still operating in the area.
